Marcus Rashford's goal after 81 seconds saw the Ruben Amorim era get off to a blistering start - but it proved another false dawn for Manchester United.
Omari Hutchinson's equaliser earned a deserved point for Ipswich, who are managed by ex-Old Trafford number two Kieran McKenna.
And the Red Devils had goalkeeper Andre Onana to thank that the Tractor Boys did not go on to take all three points.
Amorim, United's youngest manager since 1969 and the sixth to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson, arrived from Sporting Lisbon promising he could succeed where Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal among others had so conspicuously failed.
And Erik ten Hag's replacement saw Rashford net at the near post in only the second minute, thanks to the rapid pace of Amad Diallo down the right.
But Ipswich, with just one Premier League win to their name in the last 22 years, bounced back as United sat back ten Hag-style. Kieran McKenna's underdogs were deservedly level two minutes before the break when Hutchinson celebrated his first Premier League goal.
The winger, a summer signing from Chelsea, required his shot to take a deflection off the head of Noussair Mazraoui to beat goalkeeper Andre Onana, who had only just pulled off a point-blank save to deny Liam Delap. But United could hardly complain.
Amorim came out early for the second half and sat in his dugout looking less than impressed - ad United soon had Onana to thank again for another save to deny Delap.
Bruno Fernandes went close late on before Mazraoui needed lengthy treatment, and Mason Mount came on for the last few minutes. In which United needed Onana again, to save from substitute Conor Chaplin.
