ILKAY Gundogan’s stunning return to Manchester City yesterday (Friday) may have offered his new, old club a considerable fillip in their hopes of maintaining an unprecedented domination of the English game but, almost forgotten in the midst of the reunion, is an obstacle that even the most brilliant manager in modern football may not be able to overcome.

Finally, if reports are to be believed, the accusations City face over 115 charges relating to alleged financial wrongdoings will be heard, starting next month, by an independent panel.
