James McClean: 'Autism has definitely contributed to my success'

James met with young autistic football fans and emphasized the importance of raising awareness about neurodiversity.

Autism presents challenges on a daily basis but James McClean insists it’s been integral to his career strides.

The winger turns 35 next week but was only last year tested and diagnosed for the condition.

He investigated the symptoms after his daughter six-year-old Willow received a similar diagnosis.

Both father and daughter, along with Mother Erin, were in Dublin yesterday to raise awareness during World Autism Month.

“It is not something you develop, you are born with Autism,” he said, mingling with children at an event hosted by AsIAm, Ireland's Autism Charity, "It is who I have always been.

"Would I be in the position I am today without it? Probably not and we'll never know.

"But it has definitely contributed - giving me that tunnel vision, that sheer focus and determination to get where I am today - and to be the person that I am."

McClean is aware of the struggles parents and guardians have in accessing services for autistic children.

"We are in a fortunate position in that we can go private with a lot of Willow's appointments,” he confessed.

“That’s not always available to other people due to the cost, which is a shame.

"There is a long wait to get a diagnosis if you do not go private. One to one attention in school is a massive help.”
