Roy Keane has heaped praise on Seamus Coleman as the Donegal native made history with Everton.

The 35-year-old made his 355th league appearance for the Toffees against Aston Villa on Sunday to become the club's all time Premier League appearance record holder.

Speaking in the Sky Sports studios ahead of the game, Keane hailed the former Sligo Rovers fullback, whom he worked with during his time with the Republic of Ireland.

"I can't speak highly enough of Seamus Coleman," began Keane.

"Brilliant player. Great character in the dressing room, I know a lot of Everton managers over the last few years speak very highly of him."

What does that mean Roy when you talk about Seamus as being a great character queried host David Jones.

"The way he just turns up every day. The way he trains properly, the way he speaks to people, the way he handles himself" continued the Cork native.

"Obviously I worked with Seamus for a few years when I was working with Martin O'Neill at Ireland and I couldn't speak highly enough of him.

"Consistent - he had a lot of setbacks in his career with injuries etc - but he is a good solid lad, nice bloke, a guy you want to be in the trenches with."

And you always got on with him questioned Jones.

"I had a few rows with Seamus. I know you find that hard to believe," joked Keane.

"What I like about players - let me tell you - if I have a go at them and say they should be doing something... Seamus had a go back at me once, he obviously regretted it.

"But I like that. I know people think, you talk about characters, he's a great lad, it doesn't mean to say he's not a winner and he's not up for the challenge.

"You don't play at that level, with the injuries he's had, unless you're a fighter."
