NEWCASTLE bounced back from their Champions League disappointment thanks to Anthony Gordon's sixth goal of the season.

Eddie Howe's side climbed to fifth in the Premier League after a win which would have been much more emphatic had they been shown a ruthless streak in front of goal.

Victory came at a cost as goalkeeper Nick Pope was taken off with a serious-looking shoulder injury after falling awkwardly five minutes from the end.

It took the shine off a fully-deserved three points for the hosts, who secured a third consecutive win against Manchester United for the first time in 101 years.

Gordon was on hand to sweep home a 55th minute winner from an inviting low Kieran Trippier cross to reward his side's dominance.

Both sides were looking to bounce back from the disappointment of surrendering leads to draw in the Champions League in midweek, Newcastle having shipped a controversial stoppage-time equaliser against Paris St Germain.

The hosts who showed far more desire, energy and commitment to put matters right against visitors who offered little, and who were fortunate to avoid a hiding after being outshone in every department.

Erik Ten Hag hauled out-of-sorts strikers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial off early in the second-half, with the Manchester United head coach clearly irked that Martial had looked to answer him back during a frank exchange of views before the break.

The only flaw in an excellent Newcastle display was their wastefulness in front of goal. Alexander Isak, Miguel Almiron and Jamaal Lascelles should all have scored in a dominant first-half display where Trippier's stunning 25-yard free-kick came down off the underside of the bar with keeper Andre Onana beaten.

Gordon finally broke the deadlock, but Newcastle failed to come up with the decisive second goal their play deserved. It looked like it would prove costly when Harry Maguire found the net a minute from time, but the Manchester United skipper's close-range effort was rightly ruled out for offside.
