Ireland gunning for perfect Nations League sweep

Sweeping to a maximum 18 points from their Nations League group remains the ambition of Ireland, insists caretaker boss Eileen Gleeson.
Their superiority was evident in racking up seven goals and six points from the opening pair of matches, with the lowest seeds Albania in back-to-back fixtures to come on October 27 and 31. They lost 1-0 against Northern Ireland at Seaview tonight.
Gleeson is planning to be still at the helm, unless the FAI expedite their search for a permanent boss, and the head of women’s football at the association is planning for the double-header.
“There’s an expectation to do it but we’ve got to make that happen,” she said about chasing a perfect return from the six games.
“We speak to the girls and know that we should do it. Our full focus shifts to Albania as these things come around really quickly. Whether it is me or somebody new, we’ll still be able to share information and pass things on and keep the battle going.”
Gleeson only made one change to her starting lineup over the two games but used her full complement of substitutes, made easier by having the games as contests wrapped up early.
A noticeable shift in style has also been apparent, albeit against weaker opposition than along the way and at the World Cup.
“We’re transitioning new girls in,” she said, also welcoming the variety of goals.
“We know that we’re a threat from set-pieces but we want to add to our game so this becomes our super strength and this becomes what we’re trying to develop and we’re really proud of them.”
