Irish amputee footballer celebrates free-kick goal Robbie Keane-style

Alan ‘Wonder’ Wall tossed away his crutches for a Robbie Keane-style backflip.

The Irish amputee football team finished runners-up at the Polish Cup tournament this weekend, writes Stephen Barry.

The national side went unbeaten across the three games, but the highlight came in their opener against the hosts and fourth-ranked team in the world, Poland.

With the teams still deadlocked, midfielder Alan ‘Wonder’ Wall stepped up to unleash a rocket of a free-kick to the roof of the net.

The superb goal was only bettered by his celebration, tossing away his crutches for a Robbie Keane-style backflip.

In his match report, team manager Christy McElligott described the goal as “a thunderbolt of a strike in to the top corner with a great dummy from Neil Hoey”.

It was an important goal, too; one which ensured a draw against Poland, while another draw against the Ukraine and 5-3 win over Germany gave the Irish team second place.
