Mourinho’s men were unable to beat PSG at home, despite having an extra man for much of the match after Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off in the 32nd minute.

Many viewers felt the red card was harsh and influenced by the behaviour of the Chelsea players after the incident. The RTÉ Panel castigated Chelsea manager Mourinho for the way his team behaved.

Giles, normally moderate and mild in his views, didn’t hold back in his assessment of the Portuguese manager.

“I think he’s a great coach, but he’s been an evil presence in many ways,” Giles said, and fellow panellist Dunphy agreed.

“It’s cheating and encouraging cheating and whinging at referees,” said Dunphy of Mourinho’s influence on football.

“Things like that encroaching on the culture of the game can constitute a malaise on the game - a cancer if you like. It is wrong.”

Dunphy was also scathing about the Chelsea players: “They were bankrupt, they ran out of ideas”.

“They basically didn’t know how to go after a winning goal against 10 men.”

One man who sounds like he agrees with the panel is Zlatan Ibrahimovic himself - who described the moments after his tackle on Oscar as like having “11 babies around me”.

It is time for Mourinho and his highly paid team to grow up?
