Footballer Ched Evans has issued an apology following the events that led to his conviction for raping a woman in a hotel room but has maintained his claim that he is innocent of the offence.

Former Sheffield United and Wales striker Evans, who had been linked to a controversial move to Oldham Athletic this week, made his apology in a statement issued through the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA).
