Wenger: I can take the 0.1% of time fans aren't happy

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was pleased to hear the Gunners fans voicing their support for manager Arsene Wenger during today’s 4-1 win over Newcastle, while insisting his fellow Frenchman is still the right man for the job.

Wenger has again found himself in the spotlight following some disappointing results and the 65-year-old came in for some for harsh personal criticism following the 3-2 defeat at Stoke last Saturday.

However, loud chants of ’There’s only one Arsene Wenger’ could be heard coming from the Emirates Stadium stands as Arsenal swept aside Newcastle to close back up on the top four in the Barclays Premier League, and that pleased Giroud.

The France international striker, who scored two of the goals with Santi Cazorla also adding a brace, told Sky Sports 1: “It’s nice to hear the fans supporting the boss and obviously it’s a fantastic night for us and we’re happy for that.

“It’s always the same when you’re losing, the first one in front of the criticism is the boss. We will always be all together, keep the faith, keep working hard and I think there’s no thoughts about changing the boss, because he’s still the man for the situation I think.”

Wenger, whose side also scored four against Galatasaray in midweek, was grateful for the support from the stands but said he understood why some fans were upset by results such as the Stoke defeat.

Asked about the chants on Saturday, he said: “I’m thankful for that, but what you want is our fans to be happy because you win football games.

“My job is to win football games and when we don’t do it I can understand why they aren’t happy.”

He added: “I’ve worked 18 years in this country and I’m grateful for that... 99.9% (of the time) it is people with full respect, even when they’re not happy. I can take the 0.1%.”

Cazorla, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Saturday, added: “I’m very happy today, but the most important thing was the win and the team played very well.

“We need to work hard in training every day and we have a big game against Liverpool next week.”
