Champions League: Five of the best

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey stunned Galatasaray with a stunning left-footed strike in the Champions League last night.

The ball fell to the Welshman 30 yards out and he took the shot first time on the half-volley, thumping it with his weaker foot and seeing it arrow into the top left-hand corner.

Ramsey admitted after the game it was the best goal he had ever scored, but was it the greatest scored in the Champions League?

Let's compare it to some of the true greats from the competition.

Zinedine Zidane v Bayer Leverkusen, 2002

Zidane’s majestic volley for Real Madrid against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 final was a fitting winner for any tournament. Roberto Carlos hooked the ball to the edge of the penalty area and Zidane waited for it to drop out of the air before exquisitely volleying left-footed into the top left-hand corner to seal a 2-1 victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo v Porto, 2009

Ronaldo’s thunderous strike secured a 1-0 win and booked Manchester United a place in the semi-finals. The Portugese gained possession almost 40 yards out before driving the ball with such power that it was still rising when it flew past Porto goalkeeper Helton Arruda and into the net.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic v Anderlecht, 2013

Ibrahimovic scored four goals as Paris St Germain thrashed Anderlecht 5-0 and the Swedish striker’s spectacular third was the pick of the bunch as he hammered a bouncing ball first time into the top corner for an emphatic finish from 25 yards.

Dejan Stankovic v Schalke, 2011

Stankovic wrote himself into Champions League folklore with his extraordinary effort for Inter Milan against Schalke. German keeper Manuel Neuer had rushed out of his area and headed the ball to just short of the halfway line where Stankovic showed brilliant technique to volley first time over the keeper and into the empty net.

Mauro Bressan v Barcelona, 1999

Bressan will forever be remembered for his fantastic overhead kick for Fiorentina against Barcelona in 1999. The ball bounced loose 30 yards out and the Italian seized the moment, throwing himself into the air and acrobatically firing it over the Barca keeper and into the far corner.
