Aiden McGeady has played down talk this week about the hostility he could face on Friday while playing for the Republic of Ireland against Scotland and said booing is just a part of football.

A lot of the build-up to the Euro 2016 qualifier between the two side has focused on the two Scottish-born players in the squad, McGeady and James McCarthy.

“Celtic Park is where I grew up playing, I played the majority of my career there,” he told FAI TV. “It’s a place I’ve got a big emotional bond with, I love playing there and hopefully I can carry that on on Friday.”

He continued: “When I was at Sparta I played Celtic in the Champions League so I know what it’s like to be on the away team in Celtic Park.”

“It will be good going back,” the player insisted. “And hopefully playing for Ireland against Scotland there should be a great atmosphere.”

McGeady acknowledged the furore in the media

“I know you’ve got all the other things, the other side of it, people coming out in the press and saying their bit on myself and James getting booed or whatever,” he said. “That’s part and parcel of football, it’s what’s going to happen.”
