Goalie sent off for touching an opponent’s bottom

The strangest red card of the week happened in Honduras on Sunday.

Marathon took on Real Sociedad in the Liga Nacional Apertura and the game was tied in the second half when Marathon ‘keeper Julian Morales, who was already on a yellow card, gathered the ball in his own box.

A Sociedad forward had been going for the ball and as he ran back outfield Morales gently tapped him on the bottom. Neither player thought anything of it and play continued for a few seconds before the ref blew his whistle.

He consulted with his linesman before showing the baffled Morales a red card and pointing to the penalty spot.

The ‘keeper’s stunned team-mates surrounded the ref to question the reasoning behind the bizarre decision. There was some consolation when Sociedad missed the ensuing penalty so at least the result was unaffected.

Be warned footballers - keep your hands to yourselves.
