Ireland's U19 Women's team one game away from European semis

The Republic of Ireland U19 Women play England at 6pm Irish-time in Oslo, knowing a win would guarantee them a place in the semi-finals of the UEFA European U19 Championship.

The team had the perfect start to the tournament with a 1-0 win over Spain on Tuesday - the only score was this Clare Shine goal in the second half.

Speaking on FAI.ie coach Dave Connell said they had been optimistic going into the first match.

“We were a little bit confident coming into the tournament as we are on a good run – we've been unbeaten for the last nine games,” he said.

“So we were fairly confident but then again we were up against a really, really good side in Spain.”

“They are renowned around the world for their good football and their Under 17's are world champions a couple of times and they've won this competition, so it was an unbelievable win for us.”

England were beaten by Sweden in the other group game that night so a win tonight and the Irish team will get out of the group regardless of their result against Sweden on Monday.

But Connell says the team will not underestimate England.

“We know how good they are, they've also won this tournament before and have that experience, but we will have our work done and be ready.”
