Walters and Clarke may miss US trip

The Republic of Ireland will be without a number of players by the time they set off New York on Wednesday ahead of their matches against Costa Rica and Portugal.

Jon Walters and Ciaran Clark are battling illness and injury respectively, while it has been announced by the FAI John O’Shea, Seamus Coleman and Damien Delaney will not make the trip following talks with manager Martin O’Neill.

“Ciaran Clark is suffering from a minor knee injury following warm up before the Italy match and remains in England to receive treatment from his club,” said an FAI statement.

“Jon Walters was excused from training today as he is suffering from a stomach bug and may report tomorrow if symptoms improve.

“John O’Shea, Seamus Coleman and Damien Delaney have spoken to the manager and it has been agreed that they will not travel with the squad to New York tomorrow.”

Stephen Ward will also remain at home for now, but may join the squad in time to face Portugal on June 10.

Wes Hoolahan and David Meyler are due to travel despite suffering injuries in the goalless draw against Italy at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
