VIDEO: Sherwood unhappy with Benfica boss
Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood accused counterpart Jorge Jesus of lacking class after his Benfica side claimed a comfortable win at White Hart Lane.
Benfica impressed in north London as they won the Europa League last-16 first-leg tie 3-1, with a Luisao brace complementing Rodrigoâs first-half strike, rendering Christian Eriksenâs superb free-kick a mere consolation.
While impressed by a Benfica side now unbeaten in 24 matches, Sherwood was far from happy with their coach Jesus.
The pair argued throughout the match and the Portuguese showed three fingers to Sherwood after Luisao made it 3-1, antagonising the Spurs boss at the end of a match in which they did not shake hands.
âI thought his team were very good and showed a lot of class â itâs just a shame he didnât,â Sherwood said.
âIn the first two minutes he was coming over to the fourth official saying I was stepping in his box.
âHe doesnât mind himself, does he, to be fair? Waving goodbye like that [with three fingers]? It lacks class. Why would anyone do that?
âHeâs got a good side, of course he has, but, nah, not for me thank you. I have no intention of speaking to him.â
Sherwood was clearly furious but Jesus downplayed the incident, insisting the three-fingered gesture referred to the goalscorer Luisao â despite the fact the Brazilian wears number four.
âI was saying: ânumber three, Luisao, number three,â he said. âMaybe here in England the benches are too close together, compared to in Portugal.
âIn Portugal, we have more space apart and we can demonstrate ourselves in our own way.
âWhen at some stage I invaded Tim Sherwoodâs personal space, he told me to go to mine. He did the same to me. But it was no more than that, it was quite pleasant in the end.â
Jesus was not overly concerned if Sherwood had felt disrespected â âthatâs his own problem if he felt like thatâ â and insisted Spurs were by no means out of the tie heading into next weekâs second leg.
âIt was not such an easy win, although we scored three goals and thatâs a big score,â he said.
âWe did play quite well and efficiently, we did well defensively and scored three great goals. We are at an advantage, but itâs only half-time in this game.
âFrom previous matches, Tottenham have proved they are more dangerous playing away from home than at home.â
On the second leg, Sherwood said: âWeâll have a go, weâll do our best. They were better than us, werenât they? They were better than us.â
