James Chambers produced a man-of-the-match display, scoring the opening goal and then providing an assist for the second as Shamrock Rovers maintained their good form to comfortably beat struggling Cork City 2-1 at Turner's Cross.

The win stretches Rovers' unbeaten league run to six games, though they remain fifth in the table, as Cork slumped to a fourth successive home defeat in the league.

Trevor Croly's Hoops dominated from the start, with Chambers, in a more advanced midfield role, the instigator of much that was good about them.

Karl Sheppard, Ronan Finn, Billy Dennehy and Derek Foran all had openings before Chambers gave Rovers their deserved lead on 41 minutes, controlling a pass from Sean O'Connor on his chest to score with a crisp shot from 20 yards.

Cork keeper Kevin Burns made a save to prevent Sheppard doubling Rovers' lead from a header two minutes later.

But Burns was powerless to stop Rovers duly getting a second goal a minute into the second half when Chambers set up Finn to score from distance, his shot going in off a post.

Cork, who struggled to create chances throughout, got a goal back on 88 minutes when midfielder Shane Duggan pounced on a mistake to lob Richard Brush.
