Toshack sacked by Macedonia

John Toshack has had his contract as Macedonia boss terminated after just a year in charge.

The former Wales manager has left the role after failing to meet requirements set by new Football Federation of Macedonia president Ilcho Gjorgjioski.

Giorgjioski had wanted Toshack, 63, to move to Macedonia so he could be heavily involved in the development of the national side, but the Welshman had opted to commute from Spain.

He picked up just one win from his eight games in charge, and his departure comes less than a month before the start of a World Cup qualifying campaign that was set to see him face Wales.

A statement on the FFM’s website read: “The coach of the Macedonian team John Toshack was not ready to meet the requirements of the president of the FFM Ilcho Gjorgjioski and ultimately agreed a contractual termination.”

The Macedonia job was Toshack’s first since standing down as Wales boss in October 2010.

During his managerial career at club level he guided Swansea from the Fourth Division to the top flight, and won the Spanish league with Real Madrid in 1990.
