Rangel ruled out by Welsh FA

The Football Association of Wales have confirmed that Swansea defender Angel Rangel is ineligible to play for Chris Coleman’s side.

Coleman had been keen to add the 29-year-old to his squad ahead of the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Spaniard has completed his five years of residency in Wales, having joined Swansea from Terrassa in June 2007.

But an FAW spokesman confirmed to Press Association Sport that Rangel cannot play for Wales under the terms of an agreement the four home nations lodged with FIFA in 2009, which was updated in 2010.

The agreement contains no clause on residency, meaning the only four ways a player can represent one of the home nations is through their place of birth, their parents’ place of birth, their grandparents’ place of birth or having spent five years of compulsory education in the country they wish to play for.

Coleman is also looking to include Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross in his plans.

Shawcross, 24, has previously said he wants to play for England, but is eligible to represent the Dragons due to having spent the required time in compulsory education in the principality.

But Coleman will consult captain Aaron Ramsey before approaching Shawcross to determine if the pair could play together.

Ramsey broke his leg in six places in February 2010 in a tackle with Shawcross and initially ignored the defender’s attempts to apologise.

Cardiff defender Ben Turner is also known to be on Coleman’s radar.
