Ashley Young was dumped to the substitutes’ bench as Nani returned for a Manchester United side looking to tighten their grip on the Barclays Premier League title race by beating Everton at Old Trafford.

It was the Portugal winger’s first start since the beginning of March and the only change to Alex Ferguson’s starting line-up from last week’s win over Aston Villa, when Young won a controversial penalty.

Steven Pienaar was back for Everton after he missed the FA Cup semi-final defeat of Liverpool, whilst Phil Jagielka was named in central defence for the Toffeemen, who have not beaten United away from home in the league since 1992.

Man Utd: De Gea, Rafael Da Silva, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Valencia, Scholes, Carrick, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck.

Subs: Amos, Jones, Giggs, Smalling, Park, Hernandez, Young.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Neville, Osman, Heitinga, Gibson, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jelavic.

Subs: Mucha, Stracqualursi, McFadden, Cahill, Gueye, Barkley, Anichebe.

Referee: Mike Jones (Cheshire)
