Roberto Di Matteo was today attempting to pick up the pieces of Chelsea’s season after Andre Villas-Boas became the latest managerial casualty of the Roman Abramovich era.
Assistant boss Di Matteo was handed the reins until the end of the campaign charged with securing a top-four spot and doing everything possible to prevent a second successive trophyless campaign, with his first chance to do that coming in tomorrow’s FA Cup fifth-round replay at Birmingham.
