Tottenham have confirmed that an 81-year-old fan died after suffering a heart attack at last night’s match with West Brom.

The supporter suffered a cardiac arrest at the Barclays Premier League match and was transferred to hospital after being treated by medics inside White Hart Lane.

“The club can confirm that an 81-year-old male fan suffered a heart attack at last night’s Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion,” a spokesman said.

“We have since received confirmation that he later died in hospital.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Jermain Defoe scored the only goal in the 1-0 defeat of West Brom and led the tributes on Twitter, writing: “RIP to [the] Spurs fan that sadly passed away at last night’s game. Condolences to all his family!”

Rafael van der Vaart echoed the striker’s sentiments, while midfielder Jake Livermore added: “Terrible news of a fan last night who lost his life at White Hart Lane. R.I.P. Our thoughts go out [to] your family.”
