Rubin Kazan 4 Shamrock Rovers 1
A superbly taken double from Paraguayan striker Nelson Valdez saw Shamrock Rovers well and truly frozen in Kazan tonight as they slumped to a fifth defeat in Europa League Group A.
As they’ve done far too often in their European adventure this season, Rovers conceded an early goal in the freezing -6 degree temperatures.
Christian Noboa slipped Valez in down the middle and he had the pace and strength to hold off Ken Oman and drill his shot past Ryan Thompson.
But Oman promptly redeemed his apparent sluggishness within two minutes to pull Rovers level.
A free, won on the right by Ronan Finn, was looped to the back post by Billy Dennehy where Oman rose to score with a downward header.
Dennehy wasted a chance to put Rovers ahead on the half-hour before Rubin regained the lead on 36 minutes.
Obefami Martins did well on the edge of the area to set up Bebras Natcho who turned well to find the bottom corner of Thompson’s net with a crisp drive.
Valdez sealed the win on 51 minutes, latching onto a ball over the top to beat the offside trap and slam the ball to the back of the net.
Martins got a very contentious fourth 11 minutes later, tapping home after Gokdeniz Karadeniz’s cross ricocheted luckily into his path despite having gone out of play.
Thompson made a good save from Alan Kasaev’s close range effort on 80 minutes.
A minute later Karl Sheppard shaved the Rubin cross bar with a volley following Enda Stevens' cross from the left.
