Ricketts goal puts Rovers in touching distance of title

Shamrock Rovers 1 Derry City 0

Shamrock Rovers 1 Derry City 0

Rohan Ricketts' opportunistic winner leaves champions Shamrock Rovers within 90 minutes of retaining their title after they all but ended Derry's challenge at Tallaght Stadium tonight.

Now four points clear at the top of the table, Michael O’Neill’s Hoops will be going for the league when they travel to UCD on Monday week.

There was little between two very committed sides in the first half with Derry shading affairs having created marginally the better openings.

Rovers defender Jim Paterson had to make a terrific tackle on the in-rushing Gareth McGlynn before Derry carved the best chance of the first half on 37 minutes.

Eamon Zayed met a super cross in from the left by Daniel Lafferty only to see his header come off a post with Dan Murray scrambling the lose ball clear.

All Derry’s endeavour in the latter part of the first half was undone, though, when they gifted Rovers what proved the game’s only goal four minutes into the second half.

Stuart Greacen allowed keeper Richard Brush’s clearance bounce through for the run of Ricketts who could scarcely believe his luck as he lobbed the advancing Ger Doherty to score from the edge of the area.

Rattled, Derry ought to have been 2-0 down four minutes later. Gary Twigg headed a Ricketts free-kick back across goal.

Positioned dead in front of goal, Craig Sives looked certain to score, but his first time shot was straight into the arms of Doherty.
