Newcastle edge it in Carling Cup thriller

Nottingham Forest 3 Newcastle 4 (After extra-time)

Skipper Fabricio Coloccini proved Newcastle’s last-ditch hero as the Barclays Premier League side edged past Nottingham Forest in a seven-goal Carling Cup thriller.

The Argentinian headed home Gabriel Obertan’s cross in the second minute of injury time at the end of extra-time to send the Magpies into the fourth round.

Forest had earlier come from behind three times with Robbie Findley, Matt Derbyshire and Marcus Tudgay cancelling out Peter Lovenkrands’ double and Danny Simpson’s fluke 93rd-minute.

Newcastle enjoyed a huge slice of good fortune when they regained the lead after Danny Simpson’s 93rd-minute cross from the right sailed over Camp’s head and into the net.

Their luck held seconds later when Lynch headed against the crossbar, but they were undone for a third time with five minutes remaining when substitute Ishmael Miller got in behind Simpson and crossed for Tudgay to level from close range.

Tudgay blasted over from a tight angle four minutes later, but Coloccini headed home Obertan’s cross in the second minute of injury time to snatch victory.
