Derry drop points but retain top spot

Derry needed a late own goal to stay top of the table as they came from 2-0 down to scrape a home draw with lowly Drogheda United.

Brian Gannon headed Drogheda in front from a third minute corner.

Derry hit the woodwork three times before falling a second goal behind on 38mins when they again failed to deal with a corner and Gavin Brennan fired to the net.

Gareth McGlynn got Derry back into it on 74mins when heading home the rebound from a Ruaidhri Higgins shot.

Then, in a right goalmouth scramble two minutes from the end, Drogheda goalkeeper Robert Duggan appeared to throw the ball into his own net.

The result keeps Derry a point clear at the top of the table from Sligo Rovers and champions Shamrock Rovers who are tied for second.
