Rovers take points at the death
Drogheda United 0 Shamrock Rovers 1
Gary Twigg scored a late, late winner to save champions Shamrock Rovers' blushes at lowly Drogheda this evening.
With Tuesday's Champions League trip to Estonian in mind, Rovers' boss Michael O'Neill rested some key players before springing Twigg from the bench to snatch the three points with the clock in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
With Drogheda looking set to hang on for a deserved draw, Twigg latched onto Billy Dennehy's through-pass to run on and lift the ball over the advancing Stephen Trimble.
Drogheda started confidently and Rovers' defender Craig Sives had to clear off the line from Dinny Corcoran while claims for a penalty were waved away by referee Neil Doyle when Gavin Brennan appeared to be hauled down by Pat Flynn.
Rovers brought on midfielder Ronan Finn at half-time, while the later additions of Dennehy and Twigg proved crucial.
