Baggies open Mulumbu talks

West Brom are holding talks with midfielder and last season’s player of the year Youssouf Mulumbu over a new contract, it is understood.

Mulumbu, who has two years remaining on his current deal, has been linked with a move to Fiorentina this summer.

But Albion stress the new deal is to reward Mulumbu for his performances last season rather than because of any interest from other clubs.

Mulumbu formed an effective partnership in the centre of the park with Paul Scharner in helping Albion finish 11th in their first season back in the Barclays Premier League.

The DR Congo international also weighed in with seven goals to make him the club’s second highest score behind Peter Odemwingie.

It is the third new deal on the table in just over 12 months for 24-year-old Mulumbu.

He signed an extended contract last June and then another improved two-and-a-half-year deal – plus a year’s option in the club’s favour – in January.

Mulumbu has proved to be one of the Premier League’s bargain buys, costing Albion just £175,000 when moving from Paris St Germain in 2009 after an initial trial period.

Albion are continuing to hold negotiations with Odemwingie, who netted 15 goals last season, over a new contract.

He is also set to return to international football with Nigeria after ending his dispute with head coach Samson Siasia.
