Pat's overcome first-leg deficit

UEFA Europa League (First Qualifying Round, second leg)

St Patrick’s Athletic 2 IBV 0 (St. Pat's win 2-1 on agg.)

First half goals from Ian Daly and Derek Doyle overturned a first leg deficit to put St. Pat’s through to the second qualifying round where they face a daunting trip to meet Shakhter Karagandy of Kazakhstan next week.

St. Pat’s started confidently, taking the game to IBV, and deserved their 23rd minute lead.

Daryl Kavanagh did the spade work with a tenacious run to the end line to cross. IBV keeper Abel Dhaira flapped at the ball which fell for Daly who hooked home from 10 yards.

IBV might have been level four minutes later but for an instinctive save with his feet by Gary Rogers from Tryggvi Gudmundsson.

St. Pat’s doubled their lead on 36 minutes, again punishing poor defending. Evan McMillan headed Stephen Bradley’s free-kick back across goal for Doyle to head home from close in.

Gudmundsson missed a sitter just before half-time as IBV remained dangerous on the counter.

But St. Pat’s stayed very much on top and the lively Kavanagh almost got his reward on 64 minutes but fired wide after carving the opening.

But there were a right couple of scares in stoppage for St. Pat's from corners, as first Matt Garner shot straight at Rogers while Yngvi Borgporsson headed just over the bar.

Bohemians will also travel to Eastern Europe next week to meet Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie.

Meanwhile Paul Baker’s fourth minute goal gave Welsh Premier League side The New Saints a 1-0 win over Cliftonville in Dublin. Baker’s goal secured a 2-1 aggregate win and a second qualifying round clash with Danish side Midtjylland.

Neath Athletic were beaten 2-0 in Wales by Norwegian side Aalesund. Michael Barrantes and Magnus Olsen scored in the second half for the visitors to claim a 6-1 aggregate win.
