The Uruguay international came off the bench and looked lively in his 27-minute run-out.

Having tailored his formation to 3-4-2-1 to face Stoke, manager Kenny Dalglish is likely to revert to a more orthodox line up against the Barclays Premier League champions.

Midfielder Christian Poulsen sustained a back spasm in the warm-up before Wednesday’s match but should have recovered to take his place in the squad. Vice-captain Jamie Carragher returned to the squad for Stoke for the first time in two months after a shoulder operation, but may have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole injured a knee in training on Tuesday and is a doubt, while Jay Spearing is out with a broken foot.

Provisional squad: Reina, Kelly, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Lucas, Gerrard, Meireles, Rodriguez, Kuyt, Suarez, Gulacsi, Kyriakos, Carragher, Aurelio, Shelvey, Ngog, Poulsen, Wilson.
