Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll will go on trial today charged with assaulting a man in a nightclub.

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll will go on trial today charged with assaulting a man in a nightclub.

The 21-year-old is accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a man, after an incident in the city’s Blu Bambu club on December 7 last year.

The alleged victim suffered a head injury which required hospital treatment.

The footballer entered a not guilty plea at a hearing and his trial at Newcastle Crown Court is expected to last up to four days.

Carroll, an England Under-21 international, is now a regular in Newcastle United’s first team and scored the winning goal in Saturday’s Premier League victory over West Ham.

The player is a product of the club’s academy.
