Win brings Sporting closer to Europe

Sporting Fingal maintained their strong finish to the season with a fourth win of the campaign over Dundalk as both sides finished with 10 men at Oriel Park.

Victory over UCD in their final match at Morton Stadium next Friday night will guarantee Sporting Europe for the second season running.

Liam Buckley's side took the lead on 32 minutes through skipper Shaun Williams, a former Dundalk player. Glen Crowe nodded Conan Byrne's corner across goal and Williams shot home from just yards out.

Fellow midfielder Ronan Finn doubled the lead ten minutes into the second half when racing through onto Gary O'neill's pass to shoot past Peter Cherrie.

Dundalk winger Ross Gaynor was then first to see a red card for a reckless tackle on Byrne three minutes later.

Sporting had midfielder Ger O'Brien dismissed on 68 minutes for tangling with Stephen Maher.
