Gomez plays down horror challenge

Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez described Karl Henry’s foul on him which saw the Wolves man sent off in this afternoon’s Barclays Premier League clash as a “hard tackle”.

Henry was dismissed in the 11th minute of Wigan’s 2-0 win for a wild challenge on the Spaniard.

“It was a hard tackle but hopefully I’m okay,” Gomez said on Sky Sports 2.

Team-mate Franco Di Santo said: “I think it was very bad.”

Gomez admitted he was an important victory for Wigan, who had scored just two league goals going into the game.

“After six game without a win at home we needed a win. It was a very good performance,” he said.

“We only had two goals but the team is keeping working and the goals will come and today we scored two.”

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez revealed he feared Gomez had broken his leg in Henry's challenge.

“It was very unfortunate, straight away I just felt it was broken leg,” he said on Sky Sports 2. “I was very worried.”

Martinez praised the performance of his players in the second half, two goals in the final 25 minutes giving them victory.

“I’m just so proud of the players, they got together, they played as a team and created chance after chance.

“The way we found solutions in the second half was very pleasing.”
