Campbell back for City test

Newcastle defender Sol Campbell has shaken off a thigh injury to take his place in the squad for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Manchester City.

The 36-year-old missed last weekend’s 2-1 home defeat by Stoke after suffering a slight thigh problem on his senior debut for the club at Chelsea, but is back in contention for the game at Eastlands.

Danny Guthrie (knee) and Danny Simpson (ankle) are both back in full training and will play for the reserves next week, while Steven Taylor (shoulder) is expected to resume training in a fortnight’s time, leaving only Steve Harper (shoulder) and Dan Gosling (knee) on the long-term casualty list.

Provisional squad: Krul, Soderberg, R. Taylor, Perch, Ferguson, Enrique, Coloccini, Williamson, Campbell, Kadar, Smith, Tiote, Barton, Routledge, Gutierrez, Ben Arfa, Vuckic, Tavernier, Donaldson, Nolan, Carroll, Ameobi, Lovenkrands, Ranger, Best.
