Rovers fire six past Galway
Shamrock Rovers 6 Galway United 0
Galway United felt the full backlash from Shamrock Rovers as the cup kings waltzed into the last four with this facile victory at Tallaght Stadium tonight.
Reeling from their 5-1 drubbing at Dundalk in the league on Monday, Rovers were eager to respond and they took just 12 minutes to take the lead when Thomas Stewart tapped home a loose ball after Galway skipper and keeper Barry Ryan lost an aerial challenge with James Chambers.
So irate was Ryan that his subsequent protests to referee Anthony Buttimer result in a red card.
The game was then up for Galway on 23 minutes when defender Rhys Meynell turned Stewart's cross into his own net.
The goal of the game made it 3-0 on 33 minutes. Gary Twigg, Enda Stevens and Stewart all combined to set up Chambers to blast past reserve keeper Darragh Gerraty.
With the match over as a contest, Rovers rattled in a further three goals in the second half.
Chambers got his second on 65 minutes from another sweet move before he chested down Dessie Baker's cross to shoot home.
Twigg got in on the act for the fifth two minutes later when following up to score the rebound from Baker's shot.
Baker marked his return to action following injury when adding the sixth goal 12 minutes from time.
