Luka Modric is extremely doubtful for Tottenham’s Champions League Group A opener at Werder Bremen tomorrow night.

Croatia midfielder Modric was forced from the field in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League game at West Brom and although an x-ray confirmed he had escaped serious injury, he is unlikely to start at the Weserstadion.

Captain Ledley King returns after being rested at the weekend, while Carlo Cudicini will continue to deputise for Heurelho Gomes (groin), Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson are both out for several weeks with damaged ligaments and Jamie O’Hara (back) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin) are long-term absentees.

Provisional squad: Cudicini, King, Gallas, Hutton, Bale, Kaboul, Bassong, Corluka, Jenas, Assou-Ekotto, Sandro, Huddlestone, Lennon, Palacios, Kranjcar, Bentley, Modric, Van der Vaart, Dos Santos, Crouch, Keane, Pavyluchenko, Pletikosa.
