Stephen O'Donnell scored twice from the spot to move Galway out of the relegation play-off places for the first time in three months.

Galway captain and keeper Barry Ryan had to make superb saves to deny Drogheda's Peter McMahon before Sean Connor's Tribesmen took the lead on 56 minutes.

Drogheda keeper Robert Duggan took down Karl Sheppard and O'Donnell drove home the spot kick.

Glen Fitzpatrick levelled five minutes later, also with a penalty, after Ryan Brennan took a tumbled under Philip Reilly's challenge.

But Drogheda had McMahon sent off for a second booking on 76 minutes before Galway got their winner seven minutes later.

Brennan handled a shot from Tom King and O'Donnell again kept his cool to score from the spot.
