Celtic wrapped up their North American tour on a winning note as they defeated Sporting Lisbon on penalties at Fenway Park.

The Hoops were held to a 1-1 draw in normal time after Georgios Samaras saw his 72nd-minute penalty cancelled out by former Tottenham striker Helder Postiga’s late header.

In the shootout, both sides converted their opening five penalties before Liedson blazed over Sporting’s sixth, leaving Paul McGowan to fire home to secure the Fenway Football Challenge Trophy for Neil Lennon’s troops.

The occasion marked the first time a football match had been held at Fenway Park – the historic home of the Boston Red Sox baseball team – since 1968.
