Rovers set sights on table top in advance of Dundalk clash

Shamrock Rovers would return to the top of the Airtricity League Premier Division table with victory over Dundalk at Tallaght Stadium this afternoon, kick-off 4pm.

But it won’t be easy for Rovers - Dundalk have already beaten Michael O’Neill’s side twice this season.

Billy Dennehy is suspended for the Hoops after receiving a red card in last Monday’s game against St Patrick’s Athletic.

There are also doubts about Aidan Price (calf) and Tommy Stewart (thigh) who both picked up knocks in Monday’s game.

Pat Sullivan remains out with a long-term knee injury.

Hoops boss O’Neill said: “We come into this match on the back of two very good league wins. The Pat’s game was very pleasing for us because we not only picked up three important points; we showed the determination that is in this team to do well this season.

“There has been much said about the goals and penalty incident, but I cannot see how anyone could think we did not deserve to win that game.

“We know we are in for a hard battle in the game, but we’ll be looking to turn around our fortunes against Dundalk this season. We had an excellent record against Dundalk last season, and we are hoping to get back to that.

“The lads have had a good week after Monday’s game, and are looking forward to another big match.”

Dundalk must plan without suspended duo Fahrudhin Kudozovic and Garry Breen for the trip to face Rovers.

Liam Burns is also ruled out as he recovers from an abdomen injury, while keeper Peter Cherrie is still out with a foot injury.
