Bayern lose at home to jeopardise progress
Bayern Munich 0 Bordeaux 2
The pressure mounted on Bayern Munich coach Louis Van Gaal after his side lost at home to goals from Yoann Gourcuff and Marouane Chamakh, making qualification to the Champions League’s last 16 very difficult.
Gourcuff struck in the late stages of the first half and Chamakh netted near the end to put Laurent Blanc’s side on 10 points and into the next round, six ahead of third-placed Bayern at the top of Group A with two games to go.
With Bayern also struggling in the Bundesliga Van Gaal needed a good result at the Allianz Arena.
In only the second minute left-back Edson Braafheid crossed from a narrow angle on the left and Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso had to stretch to tip the ball on to his crossbar.
Bordeaux’s first opening came in the fifth minute but Gourcuff shot weakly from outside the area and the ball rolled through to Jorg Butt.
Carrasso came to punch clear from a free-kick as the home side tried to take the initiative.
Toni won a free-kick but Braafheid wasted the effort from the right touchline as he attempted to curl the ball towards goal with his left foot.
Gourcuff just failed to get his head on a cross from the left after 25 minutes and Braafheid was able to head clear at the expense of a corner.
Bayern went close to taking the lead twice in the same move just after the half hour as Bastian Schweinsteiger’s free-kick was saved and then Michael Ciani appeared to block a follow-up shot with his hand.
Carrasso just got to Schweinsteiger’s free-kick which was heading for the top corner.
Bordeaux failed to clear properly and Toni head the ball back towards goal where Miroslav Klose shot from inside the six-yard box and Ciani threw himself at the ball which hit his arm before Alou Diarra cleared.
But Bordeaux took the lead after 37 minutes when Gourcuff got in unmarked at the back post to meet a free-kick from Wendell with a downward header which bounced up between Butt and the post.
Toni wasted a good chance to equalise within two minutes of the start of the second half as he chased a bouncing ball and fired his effort high over the Bordeaux bar.
Ciani blocked a shot from Mark Van Bommel after the midfielder had surged powerfully into the area.
Arjen Robben, on at half-time for Klose, shot narrowly wide of the far post after he had been put through by Schweinsteiger.
Mario Gomes, another substitute put on by Van Gaal to chase an equaliser, forced Carrasso into a fine block as the keeper raced out and dived at the striker’s feet.
With 15 minutes remaining Gourcuff curled a ball to the far post but an unmarked Jaroslav Plasil was off target with his header.
A minute later Gomes headed down for Robben but the striker had been offside when the ball was played through and the Dutch winger, who was through on goal, was halted by the referee’s whistle.
Gourcuff could have sealed it when the ball reached him at the back post but he took one touch before shooting wide.
Bordeaux wrapped up the win late on when Butt came charging out to a long clearance but was beaten to the ball by Chamakh who slid it into an empty net.
