Philippe Senderos returned to the Arsenal team for the first time since May 2008 as manager Arsene Wenger once again fielded a young side in the Carling Cup third-round clash with West Brom at the Emirates Stadium.

The Switzerland international, back following a loan spell at AC Milan, partnered veteran Mikael Silvestre, captain tonight, in central defence, while 19-year-old Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made his debut.

Full-back Kieran Gibbs, midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere all had first-team experience, while pacy forwards Sanchez Watt and Gilles Sunu were looking to impress.

West Brom have started the Coca-Cola Championship in good form with Roberto di Matteo’s side top of the table with a 5-0 thrashing of promotion rivals Middlesbrough at the weekend.

Versatile Chilean Gonzalo Jara made his debut following international clearance and former Arsenal trainee Jerome Thomas faced his old club.
