Waterford teach students a lesson

In-form striker Graham Cummins scored twice as Waterford reached their first League Cup final in 24 years.

Second best in the first half, Waterford came into their own after the interval to blow the home side away.

They took the lead on 58 minutes when John Kearney’s corner to the back post was headed home by central defender Kenny Browne.

It was 2-0 six minutes later when UCD keeper Ger Barron’s poor positioning was punished as Cummins looped a header over him from Kearney’s cross.

Cummins got his second of the night - and 11th in eight games - on 86 minutes when picking his spot after Stephen Grant’s shot was blocked.

A minute later UCD’s misery was complete when Chris Mulhall was sent off for a bad tackle on Grant.

College captain Ronan Finn got their consolation goal on 92 minutes from a penalty after Kevin Murray impeded Ciaran Kilduff.

Waterford meet Bohemians in the final on Saturday, September 26, at a venue yet to be decided.
