Spurs: Redknapp police quiz 'a mere formality'

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp was questioned by police as “a mere formality” as part of the investigation into alleged corruption in English football, the club said today.

It is understood the 62-year-old was questioned by City of London Police officers and tax investigators.

The long-running investigation has focused on a number of transfer deals at Redknapp’s former club Portsmouth and at Birmingham.

A spokesman for Spurs said: “It was a mere formality in respect of next stage information relating to a tax issue.”

Both City of London Police and HM Revenue and Customs refused to comment.

Last May, Redknapp and his wife were awarded £1,000 (€1,150) damages against the City of London Police after High Court judges held that officers who raided their home as part of the inquiry were acting unlawfully.

Redknapp spoke at the time of his “bitter disappointment” at the way the arrest was handled, saying he believed he had only been arrested because he was a “high-profile” figure.
