Ward announces retirement

Goalkeeper Darren Ward has announced his retirement after being released by Sunderland.

However, the 35-year-old is keen to stay in football as a coach.

Wales international Ward, who has 582 senior career appearances to his name, was one of seven players released by the Black Cats yesterday as they announced their retained list for the 2009-10 campaign.

He told the club’s official website, www.safc.com: “I still have a great appetite for football, but unfortunately my body hasn’t, so it’s a no-brainer for me to retire from playing.

“I know that if I continue with my playing career, I could do myself long-term damage, so sadly it’s time to stop.

“But I am very keen to pass on my experience and am looking to get into coaching.”
