Figo to retire

Inter Milan midfielder Luis Figo announced shortly after winning the Serie A title that he will retire at the end of the season.

The Nerazzurri claimed their fourth successive scudetto last night without kicking a ball after AC Milan were beaten 2-1 by Udinese.

“I finish in the best possible way,” Figo told Portuguese sports newspaper Abola.

“I will no longer play at a high level.”

Inter, who take on Siena this afternoon, are seven points clear of AC Milan with three games remaining.

Figo, 36, won four Primera Liga title in spells with Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The Portuguese star, who won 127 caps, joined Inter in the summer of 2005 and yesterday’s scudetto marked his fourth in succession at the club.

“This is a first for me,” he said.“I’ve never won a title without playing.

“I am delighted.

“It’s always difficult to win a league title in Italy.

“But with respect to the previous scudetti, this one feels different because it has been slightly more difficult.”
