Fabianski wants to be number one

Lukasz Fabianski is ready to show he has what it takes to one day make the Arsenal goalkeeper jersey his own.

The 23-year-old Poland international is set for a run in the side following a recurrence of Manuel Almunia’s ankle problem.

The Spaniard’s injury – which is expected to sideline him for the next couple of weeks – handed Fabianski a chance to impress during the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Villarreal.

Fabianski was called into action straight away, when he produced a fine double save as the Gunners went on to secure a 1-1 draw through a brilliant goal from Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

With the chance of playing in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley later this month, on his 24th birthday, should Almunia not recover, Fabianski is hoping to use the additional game time to good effect.

“It is always nice to play, however not in these circumstances,” said Fabianski, who had been selected in the Carling Cup this season.

“I wish Manuel all the best with his help and I hope he comes back really soon.”
