Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady handed manager Giovanni Trapattoni a boost today when he was able to complete light training ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying clash with holders Italy.

The Celtic midfielder suffered a knock to his knee during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Bulgaria at Croke Park and was immediately listed as a doubt for the game in Bari.

However, although he did not join in with his team-mates as they trained at Malahide’s Gannon Park home this morning before jetting off to Italy, he was able to get some work under his belt to preserve hopes of making it for the vital game in Group Eight.

Goalkeeper Shay Given, defender Richard Dunne and striker Robbie Keane were also missing, although all three were simply rested as a precaution and are expected to be available at the San Nicola Stadium.
