Rooney scored twice in Thursday’s semi-final win over Gamba Osaka, which was enough to earn him a place in attack alongside Carlos Tevez.

Michael Carrick, Park Ji-sung and Rafael were also in Alex Ferguson’s starting line-up, who were looking to become the first English club to win the competition in its current form.
