Striker Martyn Waghorn today became the 13th Sunderland player to go out on loan this season.

Striker Martyn Waghorn today became the 13th Sunderland player to go out on loan this season.

The 18-year-old has joined Coca-Cola Championship side Charlton for a month after shaking off a knee injury.

Waghorn, a product of the club’s academy who has five senior appearances to his name to date, could make his debut for the Addicks against Sheffield United at the weekend.

If he does, he may face fellow Black Cats Greg Halford and Anthony Stokes, who are on loan at Bramall Lane.

Manager Roy Keane, who has spent approaching £80m on players in a little more than two years on Wearside, has had no qualms about sending players out on short-term deals if they are not in his immediate plans.

As well as Waghorn and the Blades duo, he also has youngster Michael Liddle and veteran midfielder Graham Kavanagh at Carlisle, Ross Wallace at Preston, Trevor Carson at Chesterfield, Paul McShane at Hull, Carlos Edwards at Wolves, Michael Chopra at Cardiff, Arnau at Falkirk and Roy O’Donovan at Dundee United.

Central defender Russell Anderson was also on a season-long loan with Burnley when he suffered the knee injury which effectively ended his season.
