Ferdinand and Rooney excluded for United

Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney were not even on the Manchester United bench for this afternoon’s Barclays Premier League encounter with Stoke at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand reported a bad back and Rooney was ruled out with a combination of a chest infection and calf strain, while Ryan Giggs was also missing with a minor hamstring problem.
